The Family Star (2024) Full Review
Family Star, eagerly awaited and directed
by Parasuram Petla, stars Vijay Deverakonda and Mrunal Thakur. The film unfolds as a leisurely-paced family drama, underpinned by strong performances but marred by a lacklustre writing and narrative execution. The movie commences promisingly, establishing its characters well and endearing them to the audience. The central concept—that every generation harbours a star destined to alter the family's course—is intriguing. However, the story falters in execution, particularly post-interval, as the narrative plummets, diminishing its emotional appeal.Vijay Deverakonda excels as the relatable yet complex Govardhan, while Mrunal Thakur charms in both dramatic and light-hearted scenes, sharing notable chemistry with Deverakonda in the film's initial half. Although Parasuram extracts commendable performances, he struggles to weave these into a compelling, emotionally resonant narrative. The portrayal of Govardhan's familial conflict with his elder brother, lacks nuance and feels hurried. The depiction of the protagonists' life in the US, including the rapport between the lead pair, also leaves room
for improvement. Supporting actors like Jagapathi Babu, Vasuki, Abhinaya, and Vennela Kishore contribute effectively within their roles, with Kishore providing comedic relief as Smarth. The film benefits from Gopi Sundar's music and KU Mohanan's cinematographer, both of which align well with its decent production values.Family Star, despite its promising setup and strong performances, ultimately falters due to its unengaging screenplay and lack of emotional depth in key relationships. While the lead actors deliver commendable performances, the film's narrative fails to maintain the momentum, particularly in the second half. Nevertheless, the movie showcases moments of humour and charm, alongside decent technical aspects. For fans of the cast and family dramas, it may offer some appeal, but others might find it lacking in the engaging storytelling expected of a cinematic experience.
